| Description: | For many of us, payroll is one of those universal administration functions that we take for granted - until something goes wrong.
But it is a complex and demanding discipline - and it's about to get more demanding. In May, an estimated 11,000 UK companies with more than 250 employees will be required to file their year-end returns electronically with the Inland Revenue. Those who fail to comply could face a 3,000 pound fine. The Revenue will also require smaller companies to file online: * 50-249 employee firms will have to e-file in 2005/06 * Firms with fewer than 50 staff will have to e-file by 2009/10. For accountants, the move to e-filing is going to be as significant as the introduction of self assessment in 1997, warns Sage's payroll and HR product manager Greg Ford. And it will affect everyone from multinational organisations operating in the UK to couples who employ a nanny. |
