For example, in the autumn and winter months the days become shorter and some people begin to suffer from the onset of Seasonal Affective Disorder. By shining pulsed light into the eyes for 15-30 minutes every day this light therapy has shown itself to be very effective in the treatment of a whole range of illnesses and complaints including, PMS, migraine and headaches, insomnia and stress.
The effects of pulsed light are hardly new, we have learned from history that before electricity the flickering light of a candle or the flames of an open fire were found to be relaxing and brought comfort to many. As we became more advanced we discovered that sunlight shone through spokes of a rotating wheel had a calming effect as well as the enhancing effects of pulsating strobe lights that became common during the early rock concerts of the 1960's and 1970's.
Portable photic stimulation devices such as The Rio Light Mask have been around for only a short time, although their direct predecessors were available as a consumer product back in the 1980's, but these were more entertainment and recreational devices rather than something that could ease the pain and symptoms of a wide range of illnesses.
The Rio Light Mask came into being because it became increasingly clear that photic stimulation was a valuable and necessary light therapy. There have been a number of trials undertaken to assess the effectiveness of pulsed light therapy or photic stimulation and probably the most comprehensive was the trial carried out by Dr D J Anderson and his colleagues at the Hammersmith Hospital in London.
Dr Johnson and his colleagues set out to test the effects of pulsed light therapy on patients suffering from PMS or Premenstrual Syndrome. Seventeen women with confirmed, severe, and long-standing PMS were treated with Photic Stimulation for 15 minutes a day for 3 months. The light device was very similar to the Rio Light Mask and consisted of a soft mask, which covered the eyes and which had red LED lamps mounted one in front of each eye. The patients were asked to use the device at home for 15 minutes per day, everyday throughout their menstrual cycle. They recorded their symptoms daily for two menstrual cycles before treatment, three cycles during treatment, and one cycle after treatment was stopped.
On average the women experienced a 76% reduction in their PMS symptoms at the end of three months of Photic Stimulation. This level of improvement is greater than that reported for any other PMS treatment, be it fluoxetine (Prozac), hormones, relaxation or vitamin and herbal supplements. By the end of the trial most of the women could no longer be considered to have PMS and would not have qualified to enrol in the trial.
Dr Anderson also carried out further tests, again using a device similar to the Rio Light Mask in which he tested patients who suffered from severe migraine. Again by simply using pulsed light therapy in this way he was able to stop thirty out of fifty migraines and out of the remaining twenty migraines the pulsed light therapy helped to ease the pain of nineteen. Dr Anderson also discovered that by changing the frequency of the pulsed light the effects were different so he devised the optimum frequency for PMS relief and similarly for the treatment of migraines.
Many people want to know how it works, after all, why should pulsed light shone into the eyes be so effective against PMS and migraine? Previous clinical trials and research shows that during PMS the body's internal daily clock becomes de-synchronised from the external rhythm of day and night. Dr Anderson's results suggest that daily use of the pulsed light helps the clock to re-synchronise.
For the migraine sufferer the pulsed light sessions re-establishes normal brain function in the visual cortex, thereby stopping activation of the cause of pain. It also was found to re-establish normal function in the brain when used during warning signs for migraine without aura.
Without the invaluable research carried out by Dr Anderson and his colleagues at the Hammersmith Hospital products like the Rio Light Mask would not have been possible.
